New Horizon Youth Centre was a finalist in the Community Partner’s 2011 Dragon Awards. Our partnership with Buzzacott Accountants focuses on giving young homeless people a real opportunity to secure employment in the corporate sector and readiness for work training. New Horizon also receives coaching in marketing skills from Buzzacott staff – helping to generate additional revenue for the Centre.
Our building is based within the Levita House Estate in Chalton St. Following a magnificent donation from Olympus Keymed to support a garden project, we have worked with the residents of Levita House to landscape the courtyard and to create a community space for everyone.. This work came to fruition yesterday when the residents, local councillors, young people and
staff from New Horizon, the London Wildlife trust and Network Rail all worked together to plant the new garden. We all had such fun, met new neighbours, made friends and produced, as you can see from the photos, such a fantastic result.
NHYC is celebrating Volunteers’ Week (1-7 June) in recognition of the tremendous contribution that all volunteers, past and present, make to the work of the organisation and the lives of the young people. It wouldn’t be the same without you! BIG THANKS!
NHYC young people contribute their artistic designs for the new medical centre being built beside the British Library at Kings Cross. This art work will form part of a mural which is going around the outside of the site whilst it is being built. Young people’s art work will be enlarged to over 6ft high and wide and will have their names on the mural. A big thank you to St. Pancras Community Centre who organised the workshop.
The Mobile TB X-ray team, on March 24th, presented a DVD video of people’s experiences of Tuberculosis, which revealed that TB can affect anybody of any age at any time. People who are vulnerable are those with immune problems, those sleeping rough, and people with drug and alcohol issues. Godgive our nurse did a quiz with young people to help them become more aware of the symptoms and to seek help in time.
We welcome external organisations and agencies who would benefit our young people. On March 22nd, the accountancy firm Buzzacott ran a very successful workshop on interview techniques where fourteen young people gained valuable skills on presenting themselves at work, communication skills and body language. Young people said “it really benefitted me because I found out how to research companies properly”. Another young person said “the training was delivered very well and it was good to have new ideas”.
At a ceremony in St Martin-in-the-Fields on 22/10/2010 Steve Bullock, chair of the London Councils, presented New Horizon Youth Centre’s ‘Creating Positive Futures works Programme’, with the prestigious Andy Ludlow Homelessness Award and a cheque for £10,000.
The Creating Positive Futures Work Programme started in October 2009. It enables young homeless people attending the Centre in Camden to access education, employment and training opportunities, by providing accredited courses on using the internet, securing job placements or helping them complete CVs.
This innovative project has secured the support of companies such as Olympus, Buzzacott and Sainsbury’s to enable young vulnerable people to secure work placements and employment.
Local councillors Peter Brayshaw and Samata Khatoon together with Shayla Walmsley, a trustee of New Horizon Youth Centre, presented the centre’s clients with accredited certificates at an award ceremony on 10th July 2010.
Peter Brayshaw said ‘We are delighted to recognise the hard work achieved by the young people at New Horizon Youth Centre, we hope that they continue to move onto positive and independent futures.’
New Horizon’s young people replicated The Trafalgar Square plinth at the festival held on 10th July 2010 and entertained the crowds throughout the day. Fifteen minute performances of dance, music, song and poetry contributed to the fantastic local community festival.
