Thanksgiving Day Service for New Horizon -24th November 2011

November 30th, 2011

The American Church in London kindly selected the centre as the beneficiary of The Thanksgiving Day Service for the American Community in London at St Paul’s Cathedral.   Members of staff and young people attended the service where The Reverend Dr Barry Gaeddert, Senior Pastor, The International Community Church, Surrey explained about the work of the centre and the needs of young homeless people especially  coming up to Christmas.  The offering from the service will go towards young people’s Christmas at the centre, when every young person receives a gift of warm clothing and toiletries.  The centre will be open every day throughout the period and good food and festivities will be shared with all young people.

New Horizon is featured on the LVSC web-site – see link attached.

Youth Homelessness Is At Crisis Point

November 18th, 2011

At a Celebrating Partnerships event on Wednesday 16th November, 150 organisations attended – Shelagh O’Connor, Director of New Horizon Youth Centre said “The numbers of young people we are seeing has increased by 20% in the past six months and yet there are fewer and fewer emergency spaces for these vulnerable young people. The situation is exacerbated by Government cuts, Local Authority cuts, and the reduction in the availability of private rented sector accommodation and the proposed welfare reforms. The lack of appropriate options for young people will mean that they end up on the streets of London rough sleeping with all the ensuing problems that this will bring for their own futures and for society in general”.

The event launched a new partnership with the Depaul UK ‘Night Stop Plus’ which will secure volunteers to provide emergency bed spaces in people’s homes for someone at risk for up to six weeks New Horizon Youth
Centre will provide a package of support in this window of opportunity to find move on an accommodation and to help that young person into independent living through the range of offers at the Centre.

Speaking about the event, Shelagh said “more is required, we need new thinking, we need Local Authorities, Central Government and the voluntary sector working together to reduce the pressures on accommodation in London and to ensure that a prevention agenda is foremost.”

Communities Working Together

August 11th, 2011

Our building is based within the Levita House Estate in Chalton St.  Following a magnificent donation from Olympus Keymed to support a garden project, we have worked with the residents of Levita House to landscape the courtyard and to create a community space for everyone..  This work came to fruition yesterday when the residents, local councillors, young people and
staff from New Horizon,  the London Wildlife trust and Network Rail all worked together to plant the new garden.   We all had such fun, met new neighbours, made friends and produced, as you can see from the photos, such a fantastic result.

Jewellery Designers!

August 11th, 2011

We have been delighted to continue our beautiful partnership with The University of the Arts, London’s Widening Participation Programme. In July, young people from the centre attended a set of four Jewellery design workshops led by Helmert Robbertsen and the widening participation team at the University. The young people were taught about the design process and developing their own jewellery blueprints. They were then given the unique opportunity to take these designs to the next stage – making their own pieces on site at Central St Martin’s. A range of dazzling designs were created using plastics. Young people were
instructed and learnt quickly how to use different techniques to create something really special! The winning design was created by Giovanna for her spectacular ‘blue ice’ pieces. Well done everyone for all of your hard work and THANK YOU! to Helmert, Holly, Tessa, Berni and Jackie for this fantastic project! Check out the bliiiing!

Snow Socks it to them

August 11th, 2011

Jon Snow stole the show and the auction when prompted by the audience,  he took his socks off and auctioned them along with his ties. The lucky recipient was Dara O’Briain who paid an inordinate amount for these prized items.

Jon Snow’s socks have made it into Friday 22nd Telegraph. Page 8,  you can read this online here:
