The situation is exacerbated by Government cuts, Local Authority cuts, and the reduction in the availability of private rented sector accommodation and the proposed welfare reforms. The lack of appropriate options for young people will mean that they end up on the streets of London rough sleeping with all the ensuing problems that this will bring for their own futures and for society in general”.

The event launched a new partnership with the Depaul UK ‘Night Stop Plus’ which will secure volunteers to provide emergency bed spaces in people’s homes for someone at risk for up to six weeks New Horizon Youth
Centre will provide a package of support in this window of opportunity to find move on an accommodation and to help that young person into independent living through the range of offers at the Centre.

Speaking about the event, Shelagh said “more is required, we need new thinking, we need Local Authorities, Central Government and the voluntary sector working together to reduce the pressures on accommodation in London and to ensure that a prevention agenda is foremost.”

In October six young people from the centre attended a sailing residential for a week with Cremyll Sailing www.cremyll-sailing.org.uk who provide sailing experience to young people to develop character, build self-esteem and an awareness of the needs of others through teamwork and a shared adventure. We certainly had an adventure! We were split into two teams – setting the sails, steering and participating in life on board; finding out about the weather and tides and charts by navigating the boat. We were set a task to sail from The Isle of Wight to Plymouth… Unfortunately having to stop at Weymouth due to extremely strong gales but after sailing for eighteen hours on the last day (in very choppy seas!) we finally made it to Plymouth!

Thank you to Skipper Tom and Conall for looking after us and ensuring everyone who sailed passed their RYA Competent Crew Certificate!

In June and July, House of Illustration and New Horizon – along with artist: Karrie Fransman ran a series of illustration workshops with our young people. This was to help our clients develop greater communication (visual & verbal) skills and confidence through structured creative image making. The idea of using comics was particularly relevant for New Horizon, where young people are also passing on their stories and ideas to each other.

Following on from the great success of this project, New Horizon has now opened a Comic Library – courtesy of donations from publishers and individuals – initiated by Karrie. We have over 100 titles available for our young people to borrow. These are a great aid to literacy, communication and it is sure to be a popular endeavour.

Our building is based within the Levita House Estate in Chalton St. Following a magnificent donation from Olympus Keymed to support a garden project, we have worked with the residents of Levita House to landscape the courtyard and to create a community space for everyone.. This work came to fruition yesterday when the residents, local councillors, young people and
staff from New Horizon, the London Wildlife trust and Network Rail all worked together to plant the new garden. We all had such fun, met new neighbours, made friends and produced, as you can see from the photos, such a fantastic result.
